The Stilt House
The Atlantic lowland regions of Costa Rica are known for their heavy torrential rains and the frequent flooding that often accompanies them. In order to keep their belongings from floating downstream, the early lowland architects began to build their homes on stilts. Although Bella Vista is not part of the lowland, and does not flood, some of the early settlers to our area were obviously from the Atlantic lowlands. We speculate this this home is a remnant of what remains from the time that the Etlingera Farms was occupied by the Bribri people.
Etlingera Farms, is proud to display an original, standing stilt house.
Upon close inspection, this home does not look habitable. And, it looks like it's going to take a little more than Shaman magic to revive it. But, it is entitled to its own electric and water meters. And, by Costa Rican standards, I’m pretty sure that means something.
